The Fallen Remembered

Our local NPR affiliate has produced an original series on war that is incredibly moving. WUOT 91.9 FM broadcast “Lost to War: the Fallen Remembered” during the week of Veteran’s Day. These sound portraits pay homage to seven East Tennessee soldiers who died in the line of duty.

One of the stories is that of Staff Sargent Victior Lieurance, killed in Iraq. His parents Andre and Karen Lieurance have spoken out against the war, and have joined other Knoxvillians to protest the war. Give their story and the others a listen and send an email to the station to let them know you appreciate it.

Andre Lieurance's anti-war position, simply and eloquently stated on February 24, was completely eliminated from the Shafer-Powell interview, an example of how skewed corporate reporting is - even when well-intentioned. IMO this journalist has not done the community a service. Personally, I'll continue to get my serious news and commentary from other, alternative sources.

Yes, I agree that Andre's antiwar views are an important part of hs story, but I'm glad we got such an intimate look at these soldiers in any case. Andre's story of "going a little crazy" when he was told of his son's death was gripping and real.

Public radio has to walk a fine line these days. While there was no antiwar satement from Andre, there also was not much flag-waving from other pro-war family and friends feaured in the series. I think the story was well-ballanced.
